Time Off Policies
UnitedHealth Group provides employees with a Paid Time Off (PTO) Program that combines vacation and sick leave into a single bank of time. The program offers the flexibility to balance home life with work, whether you are going on a planned vacation, have a family member who is ill or are satisfying a variety of other personal needs. The PTO program provides paid time away from work throughout the calendar year with your manager's approval and in consideration of business needs.
The annual paid time off (PTO) grant is determined by the employee’s salary grade, years of service and number of regularly scheduled hours per week as shown in the chart below. Your years of service at your current employer will count toward your PTO grants with us. Employees who are regularly scheduled to work 40 hours per week receive their hourly PTO grants each pay period, beginning with their first UnitedHealth Group paycheck, as follows:
Salary Grade and Service | Annual PTO for Full-Time Employees | PTO by Pay Period |
Grades 20–24, 84 (generally analysts, associates and coordinators)
Fewer than five years | 144 hours (18 days) of PTO annually | 5.54 hours |
Five to nine years | 184 hours (23 days) of PTO annually | 7.08 hours |
10 or more years | 224 hours (28 days) of PTO annually | 8.62 hours |
Grades 25–32, 85–92, M1–M4 (generally managers, associate and senior directors and managing directors)
Fewer than five years | 184 hours (23 days) of PTO annually | 7.08 hours |
Five or more years | 224 hours (28 days) of PTO annually | 8.62 hours |
SLT and ELT (senior and executive leadership team)
Any | 224 hours (28 days) of PTO annually | 8.62 hours |
Your UnitedHealth Group grade level - something you'll need to determine your PTO grant in the above chart - will be in your employment transition letter you will receive in October.
Employees who work 20 to 39 hours per week are eligible for PTO on a prorated basis.
PTO Year-End Carry Over
If you do not use all of your granted PTO in a calendar year, you may carry over PTO into the next year based on UnitedHealth Group policy and state laws. Generally speaking, you may carry over up to one standard workweek (up to 40 hours). Any unused PTO that exceeds one week of your standard hours will be forfeited at year-end.
Annual carry over limits vary based on your work location - please reference the FAQs for state-specific regulations.
PTO Borrowing, Purchase and Donation
You are also able to borrow up to one standard week of PTO with your manager’s approval. If you anticipate that you will need PTO beyond your granted PTO next year, you can purchase up to one standard week of PTO each year during Open Enrollment (the option to purchase PTO is not available to employees in CA).
We also allow employees to donate unused PTO to the UnitedHealth Group PTO Donation Bank, from which employees on an approved leave may request additional paid time off. For example, if you approach year’s end and realize that you have PTO you will be unable to use, you may donate it to this bank by the end of November. This underscores our value of compassion and can benefit not only your colleagues but you if needed.
More information about PTO is in the FAQs.
Holidays
PTO is separate from paid holidays, jury duty, military leave, and bereavement leave. Beginning on Nov. 8, you will observe these annual UnitedHealth Group holidays:

Vacation Planning
If you have scheduled and received approval for PTO after Nov. 8, you do not need to request that PTO again after you become a UnitedHealth Group employee. As long as your supervisor approves and PTO is in accordance with the UnitedHealth PTO program, you may take that time off.
PTO Transfer
Up to 40 hours of your Legacy DaVita Medical Group accrued but unused PTO will transition to UnitedHealth Group. Any hours you have accrued above the transition amount will be paid on your last LDMG paycheck. You will be able to view your transitioned PTO on your second UnitedHealth Group paycheck on Dec. 11.
