Providing critical support during the COVID-19 pandemic
Since the onset of the pandemic our team has honored their commitment to serve our members, healthcare providers and community partners across Mississippi by:
- Donating 15,000 masks to the Community Health Center Association of Mississippi for delivery to participating federally qualified health centers statewide.
- Investing $16,000 to provide 30,000 Mississippians with reusable cloth masks.
- Partnering with a local small business, Cathead Distillery, to provide over 2,000 ounces of hand sanitizer to small business owners statewide as they prepared to reopen their businesses.
- Distributing 500 blankets to Stewpot, Jackson Reach and MUTEH homeless shelters.
- Procuring toilet paper, paper towel and bleach for the Salvation Army and Our Daily Bread to support these critical partners in their fight against food insecurity.
- Providing the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center Healthy Start Program with over 820 cases of diapers and baby bibs to help stock their pantry.
- Contributing forehead thermometers, hand sanitizers and other items to organizations and efforts supporting individuals across the state.
In addition to these efforts, the team joined a community collaborative consisting of UMMC Surgery Department, UMCC Med Students, the City of Jackson, Jackson Meals Matter Task Force, Jackson Fire Department, People’s Advocacy Institute and Strong Arms Collective in support of a community feeding program and preparation of wellness kits for families in Jackson. The kits were distributed to 250 families and included information on the CDC and FDA, access to educational materials developed by medical students, feminine hygiene products, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, deodorant, soap, and other self-care items.
Partnering to provide necessities during unprecedented winter storm
When Jackson, Mississippi faced a devastating drought due to freezing temperatures in February 2020, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Mississippi, New Horizon and New Jerusalem church came together to ensure community members were supported. The storm left thousands without running water and the teams worked together to procure bottle of water and bags of food – necessities that were in short supply.
As an expansion of the in-person distribution events, UnitedHealthcare partnered with Jackson Senator Sollie Norwood to provide homebound individuals with the same critical resources. This collaboration allowed some of the most vulnerable members of the community to stay safe in their homes while still receiving support.
Health equity accreditation
UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Mississippi was awarded the Health Equity Accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) for meeting or exceeding rigorous requirements for health equity. NCQA is the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a private, nonprofit organization that Accredits and Certifies a wide range of health care organizations. Read more about this award.
