UnitedHealthcare is partnering on issues important to North Carolina: Partnering for Literacy
Literacy is a critical component of the overall health and well-being of children, and directly influences their current and future health status. 90% of brain development occurs during the first six years of life.
UnitedHealthcare partnered with Reach Out and Read™ a national, medically based literacy intervention program to provide a grant to Sandhills Pediatrics in Southern Pines, NC. Reach Out and Read’s innovative model brings in pediatricians to help change the way parents interact with their children around language and literacy. First Lady Kristin Cooper participated by reading to the children along with Anita Bachmann, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Community & State, North Carolina.
The grant will allow children ages 6 months to 5 years to receive a new book each time they visit the clinic for appointments.
